Understanding Misinformation with Reasoning: How Rhetoric Persuades Us In-Person

Join this session to learn how to teach our students to be savvy analyzers and critical readers of information in an age of misleading, manipulated, biased, and fake news and media.

  • Participants will learn how to look at different kinds of popular media and information sources, and share with others how to evaluate and consider them.

  • Participants will learn how to assess an argument by analyzing the author's rhetoric. From the Bandwagon to loaded words, participants will pick apart these and other rhetoric devices with a learner-centered approach.

  • Participants will leave this session with increased personal awareness of misinformation in multiple forms with a focus on instructional ideas to teach their students to analyze media and information critically using reasoning and evidence.
